SUBJEKT: HAAKONSEN
This is one of my favorite edits. The music comes in perfect. And the way he is riding the mountains is grand. This is definitely a good thing to watch and copy for surfing. Really still upper body and stomped landings. Good stuff. And the song is a groove. Dig back into that Primus. That’s a 3 piece band, man.
Michael Jackson, James Brown, Prince: All on the same stage
Hats off to Michael. Was he trippy? Well, here he is on stage with two other trippy geniuses. Why is Mike getting so much attention now that he’s gone—not that his coverage was sparse in his life—but why is Mike’s death such a big deal? Because the kid could dance! He could sing. And he dressed cool. Was he a molester and a monster? I don’t know. He seemed pretty pissed off in later life. He didn’t dig the tabloids dissin him. He claimed to love little kids because he missed out on his childhood; to spend time with kids made him feel happy. That was the gist of what he always said. Was he a liar and really wicked man? I don’t know and neither do you. All we know is that he had crazy style, unique charisma, and a sweet jerri curl (at least at one time). Peace, MJ.
btw: sorry the quality of this vid is kinda lame; but it’s such a deep cut, just was way stoked to find it.
RY on new cover of TRACKS!

RESPECT
Ronnie Burns. One of the most unreal surfers ever. If you’ve never witnessed his flow, here it is. Ronnie goes down in history as a true Pipeline Master. Though he never won the Pipe Masters, he was respected as one of the most stylish surfers of his day in the heavy barrels of the Banzai. Sadly, he died in 1990 in a motorcycle crash. Now, to show a true master in his element, feel this stuff: 12 foot Padang Padang, Bali, as captured in Chris Bystrom’s most epic ‘Beyond Blazing Boards.’ This is 1985, so Ronnie was in his early 20s. Which makes his casual flow the more stunning. THIS IS SURFING.
Classic Curren
So amped to find this! This puts me in the best mood! Tom Curren on his way to winning his 3rd world title in 1990. I think he won 7 events that year, including this one: the Marui Pro in Japan. Really good interview on this flick, and amazing music with a lot of passion to it. Curren was surfing so clean and precise…blowing Richie ‘Skeletor’ Collins out of the water. No disrespect to Skeletor, though…he is a legend in his own right. But like he admits here…Curren is just too epic. The most simple surfing and yet so beautiful to watch. Curren didn’t have the tricks, but his flow, to this day, is right up there with the very best. Dane and Jordy are the monsters, but they still can’t groove like TC. Plus, Curren has more rock ‘n’ roll in his hair style than every cool surfer…aside from Michael Peterson. Anyway, we love you Curren and send you huge props forever!!!
